When Worlds Collide: Road cyclists Vs Multi-use Path

A shared use trail like the San Luis Rey path through Oceanside can be a great destresser on a bicycle. But ya gotta share. The City of Carlsbad has a 15 mph speed limit on city paths, which is painfully slow for a road cyclist. Consider how relaxed other users of the path are, and how light the traffic on a path can be, and realize that all users are lulled into thinking they have the path to themselves. I have heard several stories about cyclists encountering runners tuned into their earphones, who hit their 20 minute out-and-back turn around point, and they do just that: turn around, without thought, without warning, without a glance. BOOM! One bicycle club was sued (everyone on the ride was sued, and settled out of court) for killing a pedestrian. No waiver will free you from that liability. On a trail, like the SLR, take precautions when approaching a slower bike or pedestrian. Slow to 15 mph, and shout "On Your Left" as soon as you are in earshot. Be prepared for children to step to their left in response! If you simply cannot restrain your speed, stay on the streets where it is safe.

Common employee behavior issues

• The need to add their two cents to every conversation
• The need to show people they're smarter than others by correcting every little thing
• Using emotional volatility as a management tool
• Blaming everyone but themselves
• Withholding key information in order to maintain an advantage over others
• Taking credit for the efforts of others as a way of overestimating their contribution to any success
• The failure to actively listen to others
• Positioning their annoying behavior as a permanent fixture so people excuse it for them
• Excessively rating others and imposing their standards on them
• Playing favorites at the expense of others
• Failure to recognize how their actions affect others
• Needless sarcasms and cutting remarks to sound sharp or witty

Caveat Emptor: Contractors

If you are hiring a contractor that you have not worked with before, here are three things to remember (my psychology professor told us there are always three things to remember!)

• Do not make payments at least until work has started. A common scam is to get a partial pre-payment, and then disappear.
• Ask for references, and actually contact them to check them out.
