Portion of Route 78 to be closed for 10 days
Traveling between Escondido and Ramona along state Route 78 will be impossible during a 10-day-span beginning Friday night.
From 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m June 19, a small section of the highway between the two communities will be closed to all traffic so work crews can position large machinery on the highway to stabilize a downhill slope.
The result will be a lengthy detour. What normally might be a 15- to 20-minute drive from downtown Ramona to central Escondido will take closer to 45 minutes as cars are routed along a southerly course that includes Interstate 15 and state Route 67.
There will be no access through the construction zone; however, motorists may travel on either side of the closure. For instance, even though the detour will begin on the Escondido side at Cloverdale Road/San Pasqual Road, people wishing to visit the San Diego Zoo Safari Park about a mile farther east can do so.
California transportation officials at first hoped to be able to do the work earlier this year over the course of four weekend-only closures but found out after the first weekend a lengthier time period would be needed.
In recent years, several rock slides after heavy rains have caused authorities to close the highway through that area. The work is needed to make the hillside secure and safe, officials said.
During the closure, the highway will be shut down between Indian Oaks Road and Weekend Villa Road. The detour will extend from Cloverdale Road/San Pasqual Road near Escondido to Main Street/state Route 67 in Ramona.
Eastbound travelers will be detoured south on Cloverdale Road/San Pasqual Road, south on Bear Valley Parkway/Via Rancho Parkway, south on Interstate 15, east on Scripps Poway Parkway and north on state Route 67 to Route 78. Westbound motorists will follow the same detour in the opposite direction. Other unmarked detour routes could take travelers through northern Poway and eventually up the Poway Grade and onto Route 67.

Also, from I-5 or I-15, a good alternate is 56 to Twin Peaks / Espola / Poway Rd to Hwy 67. From Solana Beach, the travel time to Dudley's using that route is basically the same, sometimes faster, than the schlog through Escondido and out 78.

Another alternative is to take Highland Valley (it is a much easier climb in your car) all the way to the 67, then 67 through Ramona where it becomes the 78 all the way to Santa Ysabel.
